Jody Watley, an original, classic reloaded member has the distinction amongst others of being the only member to have a release such as "Beginnings" on the SOLAR Records label to capitalize and profit on the crossover and major commercial success after her hit packed solo debut and Best New Artist The GRAMMYs win.  Notable as well as the label and it's founder had predicted she'd fail.

The release featured hits including A Night To Remember and Take That To The Bank. Also a nationwide talent search was held for her replacement in 84, the only other member this was done for. Delisa Davis (84-90) was selected. 

Today in addition to her own ongoing over three decades long solo career, Watley became the registered trademark owner of Shalamar according to the USPTO in 2014 and reloaded the group with new members Nate Smith and Rosero McCoy. Read the Okayplayer Interview with Eddie "Stats: Here
